About
Overview
  • The Lab Database is a web based system for keeping track of a lab's plasmids and strains.
  • The Lab Database Server can run on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. And it can be accessed using any major browser including: Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera.
  • Three different versions of the system are available Standard, Mini, and Online.
  • The Standard Version is capable of handling large databases all the way to millions of records*. It uses the freely available relational database MySQL to store the database allowing for both reliable and speedy access.
  • The Mini Version is cheaper, but it is only suited for people working with a small number of database records. It uses a plain text file to store the database information. Though this method is reliable it does not as scale and should only be used with less than 200 records. If you decided to purchase The Mini Version you can always upgrade to the Standard Version at a later date, by simply paying the difference between what you paid and the current price for The Standard Version.
  • The Online Version is a good option for those who do not wish to set up and maintain their own computer to host the database. For a monthly fee we will host a Standard Version of the database for you.
  • All versions come with limited installation and technical support via email. Though setting up the system is not particularly difficult, it does require some basic computer knowledge. In most cases where a computer savvy person is not available at your end we can remotely login to your computer and set up the system for you. However, if your support needs go beyond basic installation and/or you require additional support services including customized changes they are available for an additional fee.

Features
  • Please see the Screenshots Section and the Online Demo for a more detailed look at the systems various features. The following are some of the systems basic features.
  • Access to the database can be controlled by setting a password. There are three levels of access admin user, regular user, and public user.
  • Each record can contain a viewing only link for emailing collaborators, that allows others to see, but not edit an individual record without giving them access to the rest of the database. You can also mark records as public allowing public users who are not logged in to also gain viewing only access.
  • In addition to the built in standard fields, you can add your own fields. (admin login)
  • A pull down menu allows you to quickly browse and jump to any record in the database.
  • A Boolean (AND / OR / NOT) search function allows you to find just the records they are looking for.
  • You can attach files to each record. For example you could attach an annotated sequence of the vector or the protocol for expressing and purifying an expression vectors product.
  • Have an existing database? You can upload it and use the existing information. (admin login)
  • In an effort to ensure the integrity of the database, the system can automatically backup the database based on user definable settings. If something every goes wrong with your database you can easily restore it from one of these backup sets. (admin login)
  • You can easily download the database to your desktop for safekeeping or local viewing using programs such as Excel.
  • And Many More ...

Future Features ...
  • Ability to create individual user accounts allowing for user, group, and all read, write, and delete control of each record.
  • Complete record auditing allowing admins to see all see all activity associated with a record including: creation, editing, deletion, and viewing.
  • Addition of a Protocol Database with full indexing of attached Text files, Adobe Acrobat (pdf), and Microsoft Office Word Documents.
  • Ability to create seperate Databases for Strains, Plasmids, and Protocols.
  • Records will be linkable both within each Database and between them.
  • Ability to associate in page viewable videos with records.
  • Improved interface for specifying primary sample and sample backup storage locations.
